Lesson Plan:

Adding to a Sum of 5

Weeks 21, 22, and 23 Math Objective: Students will be introduced to the concept of taking 2 separate groups and putting them together. Students will explore this concept using math counters and then to paper. Students will recognize the symbols for adding and equal. They will be able to solve an addition math equation to a sum of 5.

Biblical Integration: Students will begin to understand that there is absolute truth and that God is the author of Truth. Students will begin to understand that there is a right answer and wrong answer in Math concepts.

Essential Question: How many objects do you have all together from these 2 groups?

-Review a plus sign (means put together) and an equal sign (means how many all together).

-Here are some adding to 5 videos: Wee Bee World and Math Online.

-Review addition by using manipulatives to count (such as stickers, goldfish, marbles, Skittles, etc.).  You need three bowls.  If you put 2 objects in the first bowl and 2 objects in the second bowl, how many should we put in the 3rd bowl to add them all together?  Once your child figures out there are 4 all together, then put 4 of the objects into the third bowl.  Then help your child write 2+2=4 on a piece of paper.  Then have your child put different amounts of manipulatives in the first 2 bowls, then figure out how many there are all together.  We are only working on sums of 5 or less (2+1, 3+2, 5+0, etc.).

-Give them manipulatives (small objects, stickers, or fingers) and an index cards with a plus and equal signs on them and see if they can create their own addition sentences.

-Do the BJU adding worksheet that was sent home on Friday.

Number 16

Week 23 Math Objective: Students will recognize numbers 12-19 and count to 19, Students will count objects and be able to match numbers to a set of objects. Students will write numbers 12-19.

Biblical Integration: God designed humans with 10 digits (fingers and toes)  which is the foundation of our base 10 number system.

Essential Question: Can they show 16 manipulatives?

-Introduce the number 16 by telling them this is another teen number.  Review 10 - 16.  Watch the Harry's Kindergarten's Teen Song.

-Have them count out 16 manipulatives and have them count 10 in a row, then help them figure out how many more do they need below to make 16.

-Rainbow writing in a 16 outline, sent home on Friday.  Review the number poems for one (start at the top and down you run, that's the way you make a one) and six (Make a C then go on in, then you've made a 6 again) in order to write a 16.  Have them draw 16 dots on the bottom of the page.

-Have them trace and copy all the numbers from 1 to 16.  You can let them copy the numbers from a number line.
