Lesson Plan:

Science Objective

Weeks 22 and 23 Science Objective: Students will also begin to understand that there are foods that are healthier for you than others (i.e., whole foods v. processed food - high in fat and sugar).

Biblical Integration: Students will take a quick look at young Daniel and how he insisted on having God's food and not the King's food. We will apply that to eating God made food vs. man made food. ie fruits and veggies vs McDonalds (or other fast food places). We will discuss the benefits of eating healthy food--Daniel and his friends were healthier and smarter because of what they ate.

Essential Question: God made our bodies work the best if we eat what kind of food?

-Go over the Bible story of how Daniel and his friends knew they should eat food God wanted them to eat (Daniel's diet video).  We still have food that is good/bad for our bodies.  Introduce what Nutrition is and how our bodies needs certain nutrients and only needs limited fats and sugar.  Have your child look at this picture and talk about the meat/milk/fruit/vegetable/bread groups.

-Watch this Sid the Science Kid video and have your child sort out a meal using the 4 small plates or bowls into the 4 basic food groups (they combine fruits and veggies into one group).  Have your child draw a picture of their 4 groups to show our class.

-Watch this Eat a Rainbow video, then Do Eat a Rainbow of Colors craft.  Color a rainbow and glue pictures of food that color (you can use food pictures from grocery store ads or they can draw their own food).  Bring this to class to show us.
